Book-Signing, Poetry, Music and Arts Event at CAL
There will be a book-signing event at the Charlotte Art League (1517 Camden Road) in Uptown Charlotte on Saturday Dec. 8 from 6 to 9 p.m. Charlotte author Pat MacEnulty will be signing copies of her fourth book From May to December.
At 7 p.m. Pat will read from her novel. In addition there will be poetry readings by local poets, music by the Near Misses and by singer-songwriter Michael Stephens and his friend Jeff. A jewelry sale will also take place to benefit the Art League and ArtSpring, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing the arts to imprisoned populations.
Art work by various local artists will be on display and available for sale during the event.
Praise for From May to December:
“No such two-dimensional knockabouts for the hugely talented MacEnulty. . . With exceptional characterization from the start, a good deal of recognisable humanity fills the pages, but under threat of being shredded by the sharpened steel of the writing.” The Daily Sport
“Pat MacEnulty is a talented writer who falls somewhere between Hemingway and Harry Crews. . . .From May to December is a brilliant, bittersweet tale of four women whose lives converge in a Florida prison.” Sarah-Jane, The Big Story
“Switching between the inner vision of each of her characters with skill and ease, MacEnulty develops the story in spare and immediate prose. Without descending to the maudlin, she deals with what could be sad and depressing lives in an inspirational way. So much so that even in death there is an upbeat message of hope.” Tangled Web U.K.
Description of From May to December: Jen Johanssen is a former porn actor trying to fit into the world of academia. Her sister, Lolly Johanssen, is a cancer survivor. Nicole Parks is in prison for loving the wrong guy. And Sonya Yakowski, also in prison, is a member of a family of traveling criminals, desperately missing her young son. The lives of these four women converge in a Florida prison, where Jen and Lolly have joined forces to put on a grant-funded drama production. Despite their remarkably divergent histories, these women come together in unexpected ways, each beginning to confront and forgive her own past.
