I was born in Paterson, New Jersey.  I moved to Swansboro, North Carolina in 8th grade.  I was born with paint in my blood.  Art has always been a part of me.  A gift some will say that was passed on to me from my father.  My father, a great artist lost in chaos, recently came back into my life.  Realizing his potential and how it was never fully embraced and utilized, one Saturday morning I frantically woke up and finally had enough courage to admit to myself my truth as an artist.  I decided to stop hiding from this gift I have been given.  I decided to take a huge leap of faith and now I eat, sleep and dream about painting and art.  I was the kid who was always doodling on everything until my mom decided to start investing in drawing pads.  Like Georgia O’Keefe, I too found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way.  I used art to speak but it also helped me to stay silent.

College is when my artistic identity finally started to take shape.  I, fighting the urge to be an artist, enrolled in a first year program at North Carolina State University .  After about two years went by, I was asked to choose a major.  Feeling already behind and lost, I chose the Liberal Arts program and obtained my B.A. in Arts Application with a visual concentration.  I embraced art during my college years.  Painting became my life and I started to realize it was what I was meant to do!

While attending school, I had many jobs in retail.  The longest was with a co-op.  I was an assistant manager there for many years.  While working there, I volunteered at many environmental groups that were proactive about getting people to enjoy nature.  So as you can see not much of a professional background in art.

That’s where CAL comes in!  By volunteering with CAL I hope to meet other artist’s that challenge and motivate me to grow and push my artistic limits!  I have always been a creative people person.  Being able to assist with the publicity and marketing section of CAL, enables me to exercise my strengths with an organization that I believe is and can be a bigger part of the growing Charlotte community.  Communities need organizations like CAL to remind humanity that art is everywhere and it is meant to challenge and engage.  I hope that my assistance will bring many into CAL’s doors to be challenged and engaged.

Charles Horton Cooley once said, “An artist cannot fail; it is a success to be one.”

I am an artist.
