Book Review
“Living the Artist’s Life: A Guide to Growing, Persevering and Succeeding in the Art World” by Paul Dorrell
Several of us had the opportunity to hear the frank, basic nuts-n-bolts, wake-up call style presentation Paul Dorrell gave this year— his take on living a fuller life, living as an artist can, if you decide to follow your dream?
In his guide, “Living the Artist’s Life,” Dorrell proposes this challenge for both the artists and non-artists, and he chronicles his personal journey as artist-novelist, gallery owner and art consultant, in part memoir and part how-to fashion.
He reminds us obsessively of the need for basic tools: blind perseverance, hard work and stick-with-it-ness. Using storytelling drama, he addresses ways to feed your art, keep your bearings straight and handle difficulties. Work, he drives home as a hard-to-harness, insatiable appetite of drive that when done correctly you need to FEEL!
He recommends risks and gambles, reminds us to run by our own clock and he addresses practical information not taught in school. He also warns about the risks not worth taking. If you think there’s this little man living in your head when Dorrell says, “Teach yourself to deal,” there is. It’s his conversational tone and 6th sense on what to do and what to avoid, while living a creative life.
Dorrell steers the artist through challenging topics such as depression, neurosis, snobbery or “wasted intelligence” to more helpful topics such as resumes, bios, portfolios, pricing and representation, and lastly, what to do once your there. —RLImbleau
